House Approves Revised State Budget, Fuel Price Hike on the Horizon - Jakarta Globe

The House of Representatives paved the way to cut Indonesia’s costly fuel subsidies amid widespread protest on Monday, taking the first step toward reducing the nation’s reliance on energy subsidies that have threatened to derail economic growth.

Indonesian lawmakers approved the revised 2013 state budget in a marathon plenary session on Monday. The controversial subsidy cuts polarized the House, driving a wedge in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s six-party coalition. Five members of the coalition voted in favor of the cuts Monday afternoon, but the continued opposition of coalition members the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) pushed the session into overtime as lawmakers on both sides lobbied the PKS faction.

In the end, the Democratic Party, Golkar party, National Mandate Party (PAN), United Development Party (PPP) and National Awakening Party (PKB) supported the revised budget with a combined 338 votes.

The PKS, Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Peoples Conscience Party (Hanura) and Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) opposed the plan with 181 votes.

Christians in Good Friday processions the world over bear crosses, wounds and prayers over a few blocks or many miles to reenact Jesus' suffering on the path to crucifixion. At the Vatican, Pope Francis lies down in prayer during the Passion of Christ Mass inside St. Peter's Basilica. Hundreds of Christians stream through the cobblestone alleyways of Jerusalem's Old City toward the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, traditionally believed by many to be the site of the crucifixion.

It's back. The virtual reality headset, the gizmo that was supposed to seamlessly transport wearers to three-dimensional virtual worlds, has made a remarkable return at this year's Game Developers Conference, an annual gathering of video game makers in San Francisco.
