India becomes pivotal to Autodesk product development - InformationWeek India

Autodesk and AutoCAD (the product) are de facto brands in the world of architecture, engineering & construction, manufacturing, and movie special effects (VFX). Autodesk products have been used in iconic projects such as the Shanghai Tower, New York’s Freedom Tower, the Aston Martin car, Golden Quadrilateral, North-South & East-West Corridor in India; Navi Mumbai International airport, the redesign of the Ford Mustang, and memorable blockbuster movies, including the last 18 Academy Award winners for Best Visual Effects. So when recruiters visit the campus, they ask prospects questions like: "Do you know Revit?" Revit is an Autodesk product that is now an industry standard for Building Information Modelling (BIM). Not surprisingly, many Autodesk products are made in India -- for the world of design.

Many design and engineering professionals, students, creative hobbyists, design enthusiasts, and VFX (Visual Special Effects) professionals make an annual pilgrimage to one of the Autodesk University (AU) events or extensions (AUx) that are held around the world every year. There are 11 AUs (5 international events and 6 extensions). Autodesk does AU extensions in Russia, Brazil, Dubai, Mexico, Johannesburg. An AUx will be introduced in Jakarta in February 2014.

The USD 2.5 bn Autodesk introduced AUx in India on December 19, 2013, and the attendance was overwhelming; over 900 design enthusiasts from across the country attended.

Pat Williams, Senior VP APAC, and Pradeep Nair, Managing Director, India & SAARC, Autodesk on the sidelines of this event. Both expressed a tremendous interest in India, and were full of praise for Indian developers who are creating apps, or contributing to product development. The company is transitioning its products and business models to the cloud.

Basic Cloud Computing Patterns for Application Development - SYS-CON Media (press release)

Over the past few years, the cloud evolution has answered all questions on the cloud being the right strategy. The key challenge that remains now is leveraging cloud capabilities and features in such a way that they can be used to innovate as well as solve business problems. If we relate different cloud migration strategies executed over time, we'll find many similarities. There has been focus on cloud assessment as well as a consideration for application development approaches. Even though business cases are different, we can still link the proposed or implemented cloud-based solutions with a set of design patterns. If we have to define a design pattern, the most common definition states it as, A widely used concept in computer science to describe good solutions to re-occurring problems in an abstract form.' Any abstract solution to recurring problems in the domain of cloud computing can be referred to as a cloud computing pattern that is independent of concrete providers, products and programming languages.

The following are some basic application architecture patterns. Most of these were referred to as cloud best practices in the beginning. As we come across multiple real-time implementations, we shall be able to easily identify a pattern in them.

On a higher level, traditional application architecture has to deal with challenges such as difficulties integrating with other applications and lack of flexibility for supporting changing functionalities in an application lifecycle. Since in a cloud environment applications can be scaled individually, it's always a good option to divide the application functionality into multiple components that can later be integrated to form a unified application.

Composite applications are one of the main elements in service-oriented architecture (SOA) that help in contextual collaboration. This approach makes applications extendable right from the beginning. The integration of other applications is also simplified by using the same integration techniques inside individual applications.

Silicon Valley VC launches Google Glass Hackathon - Times of India

PUNE: Inspired by California's wildly popular Maker Faire, Silicon Valley venture capitalist Asha Jadeja has brought to India a prestigious technology and design event the Maker Fest (www.makerfest.com) - a non-commercial event, free and open to the public.

Google's Glass will be introduced to programmers as a private initiative for the first time in India. Jadeja will be a launching an app development competition and hackathon for programmers to create solutions using Glassware, Google's open source operating system.

She is expecting this competition to give a running start to Indian entrepreneurs as they launch apps on Glassware before Google's Glass is available to the public. Jadeja wants to put India on the global tech innovation map.

Makers from all over India and some from US will be showcasing their inventions to an enthusiastic audience in Ahmedabad, at the National Institute of Design on January 4 and 5, 2014.

Recap 2013: Top trends in PE - VC Circle

Year 2013 continued with the bad news for the Indian general partners or GPs running India-focused PE/VC funds or investment mandate. The India story has taken a major hit with the country facing macroeconomic headwinds like slowing economic growth, widening current account deficit and outflow of foreign investment.

Besides, the PE industry remains plagued with lower returns due to the high valuations paid in the boom period of 2006-2008 and relatively few exits as capital markets, the main source for exits, have remained shut. This coupled with the depreciating currency and increasing corporate governance issues in portfolio companies.

But GPs see a silver lining in this cloud as many feel this could be great vintage for new investments. Also on the venture side, valuations for Indian startups have never been better.

The broad consolidation in the PE market continued with several PE firms with limited dry powder focusing on portfolio management, while others deciding to hold investments in the country. This has led to an increasing churn in private equity teams, with senior executives being asked to leave or quitting.

Change of pecking order to loss of status, it all happened in our IT industry ... - Economic Times

Although there are now limits to a bank’s exposure to a particular business group, these limits are far in excess of best global practices.

With CP renovation work in its last phase, NDMC is conducting tours inside the new, 1.2-km long tunnel with all the utilities taken underground.

TCS, Infosys, Maruti, Tata Motors and Dr Reddy’s are trading near their life-time highs, but their valuations are nowhere near their peaks.
